Affiliate Marketing
From Zero to First Sale

The no-fluff guide I wish someone had given me when I started — 10 practical steps to make your first commission online.

By Dave De Jongh  ·  davechomkam.com

Most beginners quit before they ever see results — here is why

Step 1 of 10

Pick One Niche. Just One.

I know it is tempting to cover everything when you are starting out because nothing feels off limits yet. Health, wealth, relationships, technology, pets. But being everywhere means being nowhere.

You cannot build an audience when you are talking to everybody, because everybody stops listening. Pick one niche, something you actually know about, care about, or are genuinely curious to learn. That energy comes through in your content, and it is what makes people trust you enough to buy from your link.

Good beginner niches to consider
  • Make money online and affiliate marketing
  • Personal finance and budgeting
  • Health, fitness or weight loss
  • Hobbies with passionate communities like photography, gaming or cooking
The rule
One niche. One audience. One focus.
Step 2 of 10

Choose Products You Actually Believe In

Here is a mistake I see all the time. Beginners pick products based purely on commission rate. 75% commission? Sign me up! But they have never used the product, never read a real review, and have no genuine opinion on whether it is actually good.

Your audience can smell that. And once they feel like you are just chasing commissions, you have lost them, probably forever.

The hard truth

One bad recommendation does more damage to your reputation than ten good ones can repair. Protect your credibility like it is your most valuable asset, because it is.

Before you promote anything, ask yourself honestly whether you would recommend this to a friend. If the answer is no, do not promote it. There are thousands of quality products to choose from. Pick the ones you can stand behind with confidence.

Where to find good affiliate products
  • WarriorPlus and JVZoo for digital marketing tools
  • ClickBank for a wide range of niches
  • Amazon Associates for physical products
  • Direct affiliate programmes from brands you already use
Step 3 of 10

Build a Simple Home Base First

You do not need a fancy website to get started. But you do need somewhere to send people, a place that belongs to you, not a social platform that can change its rules overnight.

A simple blog or landing page is enough. Your goal at this stage is to have somewhere you can publish content, collect email addresses, and point people towards the products you recommend.

I built davechomkam.com on WordPress. Nothing complicated. Just a clean place to write reviews, share tips, and give visitors a reason to come back.

Step 4 of 10

Pre-Sell Your Audience Before You Promote

Most beginners drop an affiliate link on their audience cold. No context, no buildup, no reason to care. They wonder why nobody clicks and nobody buys.

Pre-selling changes that completely. Instead of sending people straight to a sales page, you warm them up first. You share your experience with the problem the product solves. You talk about why you were looking for a solution. You get your reader nodding along before they ever see a buy button.

Think of it this way. If a friend told you out of nowhere to go buy something, you might shrug. But if that same friend spent five minutes telling you about a problem they had, how they found a solution, and how much it helped them, you would genuinely want to check it out.

How to pre-sell effectively
  • Write a short story about the problem the product solves
  • Share what you tried before finding this solution
  • Explain who this product is best suited for
  • Build curiosity without giving everything away
How AI can help here

If you are not sure how to structure a pre-sell email or blog post, just describe the product to Claude AI or ChatGPT and ask it to help you write a conversational pre-sell intro. Edit it to sound like you, add your own experience, and you have a ready piece of content in minutes rather than hours.

Step 5 of 10

Write Honest, Helpful Reviews

This is where most beginner affiliates get it completely wrong. They write a review that reads like a press release. Everything is amazing, five stars, buy it now. And their conversions are terrible because nobody believes them.

The reviews that actually convert are honest. They tell people what is good, what is not so good, who the product is for, and who should probably skip it. That kind of review builds trust faster than any sales tactic.

A good review answers these questions
  • What problem does this product solve?
  • Who is it best suited for?
  • What are the real pros and cons?
  • Is there a cheaper or better alternative?
  • Would I personally buy it again?
How AI can help here

Use Claude AI or ChatGPT to help you structure your review before you write it. Give it the product details and your notes and ask it to suggest an outline. You do the writing, but you save time staring at a blank page wondering where to start.

Step 6 of 10

Turn Your Reviews Into Videos

Written reviews are great. Video reviews are even better. People trust a face and a voice in a way they never quite trust text on a screen, and YouTube is one of the most powerful free traffic sources available to affiliate marketers.

Here is exactly how I do it, and it takes far less time than you would think.

The simple process I use
  • Write your review as normal, then paste it into Claude AI and ask it to turn it into a slide deck with speaker notes for each slide
  • Load those slides into a free tool like Clipchamp or Canva, both have presentation and video modes built in
  • Record your own voice reading over the slides, or use the built-in AI voices if you prefer not to be on camera
  • Export the video, upload it to YouTube, and link back to your written review in the description

That is genuinely how I create video content. Claude AI handles the structure, Canva or Clipchamp handles the production, and the whole thing can be done in an afternoon. You do not need a studio, expensive gear, or years of video editing experience.

How AI can help here

Paste your finished written review into Claude AI and use this prompt: "Please turn this review into a slide presentation with 8 to 10 slides and speaker notes for each slide that I can read as a voiceover." You will have a complete video script and slide structure ready in seconds.

Step 7 of 10

Add Bonuses to Stand Out From the Crowd

Here is something most beginner affiliates do not know. When someone is deciding whether to buy a product, they often have several affiliate links in front of them, yours included. A bonus gives them a real reason to choose your link over everyone else's.

A bonus does not have to be complicated. It just has to be genuinely useful and relevant to the product you are promoting. A short checklist, a video walkthrough, a resource guide, a template — anything that helps the buyer get better results with what they just purchased.

The key to good bonuses

Three or four genuinely useful bonuses will outperform a page stuffed with fifty low-quality freebies every single time. Make your bonuses feel like they were created specifically for this promotion, not just grabbed from a folder and slapped on a page.

Bonus ideas that actually add value
  • A quick-start checklist that gets buyers up and running faster
  • A short video walkthrough that complements the main product
  • A resource list of tools that work well alongside the product
  • A case study or example showing the product in action
  • A template the buyer can use straight away

Creating a bonus used to take hours. Today you can use Claude AI or ChatGPT to write a checklist or short guide in minutes, then format it nicely in Canva as a PDF. You can have a professional-looking bonus ready to deliver the same day you decide to promote a product.

Step 8 of 10

Focus on One Traffic Source Until It Works

I wasted a lot of time in my early days trying to be everywhere at once — blogging, YouTube, social media groups, forums. I was busy but going nowhere fast.

The moment things started clicking was when I stopped spreading myself thin and committed to one traffic source until I actually understood it properly.

The rookie mistake

Doing five traffic sources at 20% effort each is far worse than doing one at 100%. Master one source first. Then add another. That is how you actually scale.

Option A
SEO blogging. Write helpful articles that rank on Google. Slow to build but it compounds over time. Great if you enjoy writing.
Option B
YouTube. Video reviews and tutorials build trust fast. The content lasts for years and keeps working while you sleep.
Option C
Email marketing. Build your list from day one and promote directly to people who already know and trust you.
Option D
Social media. Facebook groups, Reddit, Quora. Be helpful first. Promote second. Never spam your link.
Step 9 of 10

Build Your Email List From Day One

If I had to name the one thing that separates affiliates who make consistent money from those who do not, it is this. The ones who win have a list.

Social media followers can disappear overnight. Google rankings can drop. But your email list belongs to you. No algorithm can take it away and no platform can shut it down.

Think about it this way
1 email list

Is worth more than 10,000 social media followers you cannot contact directly. Start building yours before you feel ready. A simple lead magnet is all you need to get started — a checklist, a short guide, a resource page.

What to do with your list once you have it
  • Share helpful content regularly, not just promotions
  • Build trust before you ask people to buy anything
  • Recommend products you genuinely believe will help them
  • Follow up consistently — most sales happen after the third or fourth email
How AI can help here

Writing a welcome email sequence used to be one of the most intimidating parts of starting an email list. Today you can describe your niche and audience to Claude AI and have a full five-email welcome sequence drafted in minutes. Edit it, make it sound like you, and you are done.

Step 10 of 10

Track Everything. Improve What Works.

Most beginners skip this step entirely and it is the main reason they stay beginners. They promote things but have no idea which content is driving clicks, which emails are converting, or which traffic source is actually worth their time.

You do not need expensive software to start. Even a simple spreadsheet where you record your clicks, conversions and commissions each week will show you patterns you would never spot otherwise.

What to track from the start
  • Which articles or posts are getting the most traffic
  • Which affiliate links are getting clicked and which are not
  • Which email subject lines get the best open rates
  • Which products are converting and which are just getting clicks

Once you know what is working, do more of it. Once you know what is not, stop wasting time on it. That is the whole game. Test, track, improve, and repeat.

The cycle
Test. Track. Improve. Repeat.
